HISTORY

Tanglewood Church was chartered in the year 1938. The charter members, under the leadership of Pastor Frank Bradshaw, met on Orion Street in Kinston, North Carolina.

Services moved from Orion Street to the recreation building at Simon Bright Apartments. Later locations included worship facilities on Desmond Street and Hooker Street. In the early years of the church there were economically hard times. Pastors sometimes survived on produce and chickens, tithed by members. During these difficult days, the women of the church would sell chicken plates each Friday in order to make the payments on the Hooker and Desmond Street buildings. The Desmond Street location had only a sawdust floor until the men worked together to put flooring down. In 1969, property was purchased on Rouse Road for $15,000. A church building was constructed, at a cost of $30,000, in 1972. Two years later, a parsonage was purchased for $40,000.

A turning point in our church history was in 1982 when Pastor Kenneth Hensley, and his wife Priscila, came to Tanglewood. During his 11 year tenure the church experienced substantial growth in all areas. As the Lord blessed, and our congregation grew, the need for a new sanctuary became very evident. Under the leadership of Pastor Hensley, construction was begun on a new 400 seat sanctuary. This building program was completed in 1985, and involved the transformation of the former sanctuary into an educational department.

On October 27, 1990 the foundation was laid for a Family Life Center. Once again, the air was filled with excitement as our men began construction. The Family Life Center was completed in 1991 and contains a gymnasium, a fully-equipped kitchen, and spacious classrooms.

Under the leadership of Pastor Timothy Lanier the Tanglewood Church continued to experience growth and as a result the need arose yet again to build a new Sanctuary. By the year 2000 this building project was completed, providing this church community with not only a spacious worship area but also a new administrative office complex.

Today Tanglewood Church is once more looking ahead and experiencing God’s plan within this community of Faith by adding more classrooms in a new education building, providing much needed space for our growing children and adult Sunday School classes. Now under the leadership and vision of Pastor Allen Stocks, Tanglewood Church is “Moving Forward” to pursue what God has in store for us as a community of believers.

WE ARE Biblical

We value the Bible as God's inspired Word. Therefore, we will equip disciples through the teaching of His word.  The preaching and teaching of the Word of God moves the hearts and lives of people to turn from sin to Jesus Christ. We proclaim a gospel that has the power to reform our culture.  However, we recognize the fact that it is impossible to preach a gospel that is completely devoid of cultural influence.  Instead, we seek to communicate in ways that are relevant, applicable, and transformational within the context that we live in. (Acts 2:42, 2 Timothy 3:16, 1 Corinthians 9:19-23)

WE ARE Worshipful

We value authentic worship, both personally and corporately.  We believe that worship is our response to God.  We belong to Christ and He deserves our worship.  Therefore, we must practice a life of worship that invites the presence of Jesus into our lives.  Worship is more about what we do, than what we say. (Romans 12:1-2)

WE ARE Transformational

We value the redemptive power of the gospel to transform our individual lives, as well as our entire culture. Our conviction is that Jesus Christ is reconciling all things to himself (Colossians 1:19-20). This means that every part of our lives and everything in this world should be brought into contact with Christ’s restoring grace.

WE ARE Relational

We value respect and integrity in authentic relationships.  Jesus said that the world will know that we are his disciples by our love for one another.  We believe the church should be a safe place where people can be honest, share their challenges, wrestle with truth, and look for help in a time of need. (John 13:35)

WE ARE Generational

We value every generation and believe that we are designed to work together for the fulfillment of the Kingdom of God.  Together, we are called by God to love and serve our city and to also love and serve the local church with the gifts that we have been given.  We believe that we have the biblical responsibility to honor the Lord with our time, talent, and treasures. (Matthew 28:16-20, Nehemiah 3:1-32, Romans 12:3-8)

BIBLE

We believe in the Bible as God’s only inspired, inerrant and authoritative revelation of Himself to man in written form (2 Timothy 3:16,17)

HEALING

We believe in divine healing for the total person, spirit, mind and body and that this healing is accomplished in the redemptive work of Christ on the cross and appropriated in the believer’s life through prayer (Isaiah 53:5; Matthew 8:17, 1 Peter 2:24; James 5:13-15).

TRINITY

We believe in one God, eternally existing in three Persons; God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit ( 1 John 5:7).

CHRIST

We believe in the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ (John 1:1), His virgin birth (Matthew 1:18), His sinless life (2 Corinthians 5:21), His miracles (Acts 10:38), His vicarious death as the only sacrifice for the sin of the world ( 1 John 2:2), His bodily resurrection from the dead (Luke 24:39), His ascension to the right hand of God as our intercessor (Hebrews 4:14), and His future return in glory first to rapture His church (I Thessalonians 4:16-18), and second, to establish the Kingdom of God upon the earth (Revelation 20:6). We believe in the finality of Christ’s mediatorial work for the redemption of mankind and the present freedom of access to the Father (I Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 7:25).

NEW BIRTH

We believe in the new birth as the only means of receiving eternal life. The new birth involves a cleansing and deliverance from the penalty and power of sin, It is effectuated through faith in Jesus Christ and repentance from sin (John 3:3,5,7; Ephesians 2:8,9; 1 Peter 1:18-20).

RESURRECTION

We believe in the resurrection of the dead; first the righteous unto eternal life and second, the ungodly unto eternal separation (Daniel 12:2; John 5:28-29; Revelation 20:4-6, 11-15).

SPIRIT

We believe in the baptism of the Holy Spirit as an enduement of power for all believers (Acts 2:4, 38-39; 10:44-45; 19:1-6; Ephesians 5:18). This baptism results in deeper expression of spiritual fruit (Galatians 5:22,23), a greater growth in Christlikeness (2 Corinthians 3:18), a genuine manifestation of spiritual gifts (I Corinthians 12:1-11) and a more effective prayer life (Romans 8:26-27).

GROWTH

We believe in the process of spiritual development (sanctification) accomplished in the believer’s life by the Holy Spirit through yieldedness and obedience. This growth involves a daily dying to sin and living unto righteousness (Romans 6:1-23), finds expression in a holy life (Ephesians 4:24) and will be perfected at the return of Christ (I John 3:2).

We believe in the sacraments of the Church established by Jesus Christ our Lord; the Lord’s Supper (Matthew 26:26-30; I Corinthians 11:23-26) and baptism by immersion as a witness of the new birth (Matthew 28:19, I Peter 3:20-22).
